Luis O. Silva is a researcher at the Instituto de Investigaciones en Matemáticas Aplicadas y en Sistemas (IIMAS), of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He is working on spectral theory of operators and its applications.
Luis' Alma Mater is Санкт-Петербургский Государственный Университет (СПбГУ) in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He holds B. Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Higher Mathematics and Mathematical Physics at the Faculty of Physics of the СПбГУ.
Research work is mainly focused on the spectral theory of linear operators and its applications. There is interest in the direct and inverse spectral analysis of various classes of differential and difference operators, particularly, Schrödinger operators, Jacobi operators, and operators whose matrix representation is a band diagonal matrix. All these operators are found in mathematical physics and have multiple applications not only within physics.
One way of approaching direct spectral analysis is based on asymptotic analysis of so-called generalized eigenvectors. Thus, the asymptotic analysis of solutions of difference equations is an area of interest.
Inverse spectral theory is related to function theory, hence various clases of functions being analytic in certain regions of the complex plane are studied.
Interpolation and sampling of analytic functions are connected with inverse spectral problems. One can approach interpolation and sampling by means of Krein's theory of representation of symmetric operators, and particularly entire operators. There is interest in various problems related to this theory.
Luis O Silva is a scientific board member of the Coloquio Interinstitucional de Análisis
